As an infrequent seller on eBay I've been caught out with the Paypal email address when listing. In May I changed my email address on eBay and Paypal from wanadoo to gmail, as EE were closing all email service (including wanadoo, fsnet, fsmail, orange etc) on 31st May.

Listed 7 or 8 items last Thursday, saw the Paypal payment option was ticked but did not notice that it was my old wanadoo address. Noticed that a few days later - bywhich time I had bids on 2 items. All the items with no bids, I was able to revise the payment address, but on the 2 with bids that option was greyed out. Ebay online chat was the proverbial chocolate fireguard, even though they'd done a security check so they knew they were talking to the account holder - me. All they could say was "Put a note on the listing telling successful bidders to wait for a Paypal invoice before paying, and explaining why".

Ebay somehow automatically added my old address to the listing when I created it, but I'm damned if I can find any mention of the old address in "My Account", so that's another glitch in their listing system!!

Wish me luck on Thursday when my listings end and 2 of my items have sold!!

It isn't an eBay glitch, it is an error you made by not checking as you listed.

Personally if you have put the wrong PayPal address on the listing I would pull the listing ad pay the FVfs and re list rather than risk buyers paying quickly.

If buyer pays then they will see the status as paid but unclaimed , but you won't have the money, that leaves you having to try and persuade the buyer to reclaim the money and then wait 5 -7 days for it to clear back to their account and then pay you direct. Even if you get to them first you won't be able to change the PayPal address so will have to somehow get your buyers email and send them a PayPal invoice, or persuade them to send you money without using the eBay invoice system, whils tperfectly safe for a buyer many will see you as a scammer and refuse to pay or insist on paying through eBay.

Just pull the listing and change your PayPal ID to the correct one and re list.

Incidentally, eBay don't add the PayPal Id to your listing, it just stays at whatever you last used until you change it. The email address you have registered with eBay is entirely different and doesn't have to match your PayPal ID, so the error was unfortunately yours.

Thanks Soolin, appreciate the helpful comments. As I said, I'm only an occasional seller, it's probably 2 years since I last listed anything for sale, lesson learnt! What annoys me most is that the online help bloke was not able to amend the listing - you would think they would have access to do such things once convinced it was a legit request.

Just because someone you would think has access doesn't mean they don't have procedures and policies in place.

eBay has 11600 staff worldwide. What do you think would happen if they were all busy going into the system and changing things on people's adverts on an ad-hoc basis, things that weren't permitted by the system?

Aside of soolin's suggestions, you could try adding the email back onto your Paypal account.

He doesn't "wanadoo" that because the wanadoo email address no longer exists - EE closed their email service on 31st May this year, including all orange, wanadoo, fsnet, fsmail and sundry others due to the numerous takeovers over the years - leaving loads of "customers" well annoyed with EE, as some like me had had the same email address for many many years and had the fun of changing not just to everyone in your address book, but also the various forums, shops and mailing lists subscribed to. took me a week, and I'm sure I missed a few!

Anyway, I've put a big note on the listings involved, fingers crossed bidders can read. Luckily the listings finish middle of Thursday afternoon so I'll be sat here ready.

You do realise you can add an email to your Paypal account even though it isn't in use? The problem lies where the email is in use and is used by someone else.

I've just added a really old gmail to mine (which I no longer use) and I've accessed the email account to see if I need to 'verify' the email and no I don't.

    Dear xxx,
This is just to confirm that you added a new email address (thisnewemail@gmail.com) to your PayPal account.

If want to make this your primary email address - where we'll send all your account-related information - log in to your PayPal account and go to your Profile.

If you didn't add this email address, let us know straight away. This helps us make sure that no one is accessing your account without you knowing.

    Yours sincerely,

Buyers don't read and furthermore, if you ask buyers to send the payment elsewhere - other than their normal click through - they are not going to like it.
