iPhone 6Plus Touch Disesase

Over the last few months my iPhone 6+ has developed what has been referred to as 'Touch Disease'; more here: LINK

Been to Apple who acknowledge the fault but only replace for a fee - £149 for a refurb iDevice. They've suggested I speak to the retailer. Spoke to EE who fobbed me off.

What are my rights here? Any help would be much appreciated.

The device was purchased in 2014 from Mobilesdirect and it was on EE network. Apple have it down as EE being the retailer.

Thanks in advance.

Pay the £149 or 'upgrade' your handset, it's semi amusing when you see the posts about iphones when a new one is soon to be released ahppens every year on here, but yes, the screens seem unreliable a guy at work has similar with his, my xperia z has been sweet for well over 4 years.

We're talking about a phone that's very nearly three years old.

I wonder what a three year old iphone is worth?

Perhaps putting £149 towards a replacement is not such a bad idea?

And when you do replace the phone remember to buy one with more than a one year manufacturer's warranty. At least it shows they have some faith in their product.

Your rights remain with the original retailer. If they're not willing to help then you would have to go down the route of commissioning an independent report to prove that the phone was inherently faulty, and then more than likely end up in the small claims court. While the screen problem is well documented (even making the Wiki listing) I would point out that most people keep their mobile for 2-3 years before upgrading, so from that point of view you've already had your phone for the 'average' lifespan. That of course doesn't in anyway detract from your consumer rights. Personally I would (through gritted teeth) either accept Apple's offer or, depending on available funds, consider buying a replacement handset. Some battles are worth fighting and some (while morally right) just seem like a lot of time and effort for little real world reward at the end of the day. Just my opinion though :)

It doesn't matter who Apple have down as the retailer - it's who you bought it from.

If Mobilesdirect took your money then they should provide you with the remedy (which is why EE may be fobbing you off).

I think Mobilesdirect are part of the Carphone Warehouse/Dixons group (they may not interact with their stores) so you should be pursuing them for a remedy.

    Thanks for the replies.

Regarding the comment over the lifespan of phones; that's a moot point as I've got both an iPhone 3GS and 4S that still work perfectly. In fact the issue is so bad that I've been tethering the 6+ with the 4S.

The issue is that, 'Touch Disease' is a well known fault on the 6 and mainly 6+ devices that Apple accepted it but in their little way as not to accept liability for a poor design - remember 'bendgate'?

Whilst its an old phone and new ones might be around the corner, the issue is thus: don't pay and loose on re-sale or trade-in value or pay for repair and be even more out of pocket.

To be fair, am not one of these people that upgrades each year; never bothered with the iPhone 7 as the 8 is nearby and the 6+ was performing well enough until last few months. And, my thinking was if the 8 is naff at least I can continue with the 6+. That plan is now scrapped as the phone.

Would I be correct in thinking as it's pre-October 2015 rules that apply here?

But if you choose the second option the re-sale value is higher, so to say you would be 'even more out of pocket' is not quite right.

Yes, since you made the purchase in 2014, that's right.
