Can my auntie transfer her house to us?

I have had a relative in a similar situation to the OP's Auntie. She was far too trusting, and allowed 2 family members to move in with her on the pretext that it would be better to be cared for by close relatives, and also for security reasons. Sadly, once the lady was admitted to hospital, they abandoned her and refused to have her return to what they then considered their home.
Unfortunately for the 'fake' carers, the authorities got involved (safeguarding triggered by the Hospital Social Worker). This meant that the police started investigating possible abuse. Needless to say, the pair did a runner to avoid prosecution.
So not quite as simple as moving in and usurping someone in their own home.0 -
Margot, I think there's probably quite a bit of this going on, exploitation of vulnerable, elderly people that doesn't either get picked up, or, if it's reported, nothing gets done. Elder abuse/exploitation, which includes financial, is not yet legislated for properly.
Luckily, since your relative had a hospital admission, it came to light when they wanted to discharge her. "Yes, I have my own house, and I want to live there but my relatives, who have moved in to help me, don't want me back". Outrageous. Thank goodness for hospital discharge officers and social workers. At least in a hospital setting these things are going to get picked up.0 -
