Not unless it needs to go to probate e.g there's property involved and/or large amounts of money/other valuable assets. If a grant of probate is needed then you can download a copy of the will once probate has been granted, for a small fee.

I'd post this on the 'Deaths, Funerals & Probate' board may get more answers there.

  • Unless you were left a percentage of the estate rather than a set sum is there any need to know the value?

If you have been left a specific legacy, the value of your inheritance should be given in the will.

You could ask the executors about the total estate value but they don't have to tell you.

When I received an inheritance I also got a statement of accounts showing the value of the estate and the expenses paid out.

This is usual if you receive a share of the final estate.

Beneficiaries who receive specific items or set sums of money may not get the estate accounts. Their inheritance is set out in the will and won't vary depending on the total value of the estate.
  • Thank you for your replies. I need to see the deceased's solicitor to return some photos they gave me but are not relevant to me so will ask to see if they will tell me the estate's value. I was left a specific amount not a percentage.

Then they are unlikely to tell you, as there is no need.

The value of the estate will not impact you unless it is less than the legacy detailed to you in the Will. That is unlikely, and the solicitor would've mentioned it when they contacted you to begin with.

Why do you want to know the value of the estate?
