I need to switch to the cheapest possible shampoo and conditioner for my children, but I would still like it to be non-toxic. Any recommendations? Many thanks in advance!

Christ! I would hope they are all non-toxic! What are you using- nuclear waste!0

"Non-toxic" is the term loosely used to describe synthetic chemicals that are considered by many to be harmful, especially to young children. Suggestions for alternatives welcome! Common chemicals used that I wish to avoid include:
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
Sodium Chloride
Polysorbates
PEG (polyethylene glycol)
Amodlmethlcone
Cetrimonlum Chloride
Parabens0 -
Sodium chloride is common salt as used in cooking and only toxic if ingested in large amounts. Did you mean ammonium chloride? It is sometimes used in shampoo.0

Thank you for your reply. I believe sodium chloride is used as a thickener where sodium lauryl sulfate is used. It can cause the scalp to dry and itch.0

Best not take your children to the seaside then as seawater is full of sodium chloride!
You might find that natural soaps are less likely to contain undesirable chemicals and cost less. I use soap instead of shampoo but it is less suitable for long hair.0 -
BigGreenSmile is a decent place to start looking. Generally, 'natural' type products won't be very cheap though - if you want ingredients that can't be synthesised cheaply in a giant vat, you have to pay for it or make your own. I like Weleda for myself and we all use Faith in Nature. Neither are too pricey but they'll never be as cheap as the big brands. Soap nuts are okay on hair if you want something completely natural and are supposed to protect against nits too.0

Agree entirely- I am becoming concerned by the increasing prevalence of dihydrogen monoxide in these products- another one to avoid!!0 -

I like Charles Worthington's Salon @ Home (from Boots) . . £5.99 a bottle or 3 for £10.00
It smells good & isn't tested on animals, is paraben/SLS & Silicon free x0
