im after a petrol trimmer for cutting overgrown brambles in the garden and also a hedge strimmer that comes with the same machine as an attachment.
I would prefer to stick to well known brands such as Mountfield, Stihl, Honda etc.
What ones have you all got for these garden tasks?

I have a Tanaka strimmer. Not the cheapest but must be at least 15 years old and still going strong.
Avoid the cheapies like Flymo, Black&Decker, they fall apart very quickly. For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.0 -
Mountfield aren't what they used to be. No UK manufacture nowadays. Re-labelled Far East imports, but cheaper than Stihl, Honda etc.0

I've noticed this recently. A lot of brands aren't what they used to be - e.g. Dualit, AEG, Karrimor. A reputation recalled from 5, 10, 20 years ago is not a reliable approach. Conversely, many brands unheard of 5, 10 years ago are high quality.0 -

I've got the 26cc version of this, but the 52cc version might be better for brambles and gets great reviews:

No hedge trimmer attachment, but you could buy a separate hedge trimmer, or buy the 5 in 1 which also has good reviews:

All UK made as well.0 -
I've got a Ryobi petrol strimmer/brushcutter (it's actually part of a set with different heads) which has worked very well for the last 5 or 6 years.
I believe Screwfix do a multi head set for about £130 with a brush cutter/strimmer head, pruner and hedge trimmer.
I've got the basic engine with the hedge trimmer attachment which works well enough, although it's heavier that the (now unfortunately unavailable) ryobi multi head hedge trimmer I used to use.0 -
I have a Honda brushcutter with the same engine as this multi tool:

Starts easily and no mucking around with 2 stroke fuel....and that's after 8 years of hard work. Enough power there for brambles etc with the right head on it, and it will even run upside down!

I have bought the 5 in 1 linked above for the same job as OP. Works well for me and pretty cheap.
Edit: I don't rate the ear defenders they provide so I recommend you purchase a pair separately.YNWA

My hubby has got a McCulloch Elite and rates it.0

Other posters have mentioned this but just to emphasise - to cut through long established brambles you probably need a strimmer with a brush cutter attachment. This isn't just the whirling line business, it's a disk that spins and cuts through the tougher stuff.0
