You do realise that you will have to prove that your relationship is real and not a visa scam - the length of time you've been a couple will be one of the things they look at.

You will need to know a lot about each other and each other's family and friends. You will need evidence that you have done stuff together - photos of a range of social events and holidays, etc.

He was a solo traveller in the US less than a month ago. This might prove a challenge.

Been married 16 years to my UK hubby now.

We took turns visiting each other once a month NYC-LONDON and vice versa for 6 months and I applied for a fianc! visa and came over 1 February 2001. Married 7-7-01, indefinite leave to stay followed and I became a dual citizen Autumn 2004 after the birth of my first child who was born a dual.

I was grilled at the UK embassy and had to show letters to each other, plane tickets, marriage invitations for up coming wedding and had to swear I would not work whilst in the UK on fianc! visa. My DH also had to have a letter from his employer stating he was financially able to have me as a dependent.

I have a feeling it is even harder now, but if it is the real deal you just have to go through the governmental checks and pay up!

I wouldn't suggest getting married first, it is best to follow the procedures to the letter otherwise it makes you have to produce even more paperwork and time wasted.

I kept my NYC apartment and sold it after a year of marriage 'just in case.'

Like I said been married 16 years now with a 10 and 13 year old so it worked out in my case having spent very few days that weren't a long distance relationship....
