Wing mirror clip - failure to stop?
Hi,
So just to start I am a massive worrier so hope I may be going a bit over the top here.
The other day I brushed a cars wing mirror in a car park. It barely moved and the driver was there. I didn't think much of it and went in the shop. On the way out the driver stopped me and had a little go at me. I apologised and said there was no damage. Their parting shot was they had my reg number.
This got me worrying that they will report me. I've just started a new job so something like this could be a huge issue.
Now I'm hoping I'm worrying over nothing and this was merely a jibe. There's no damage on my wing mirror and I didn't see anything significant on theirs. I'm just worried they report me and I get done for leaving an accident or failure to report (are these criminal offences?).
Was just hoping someone could provide some insight for me?
Thanks

You should, obviously, have stopped and apologised at the time.
If there's really no damage, then there's nothing to report you for - but I can't blame the other driver for having a pop at your lack of consideration.0 -
I did sort of wave an acknowledgement and mime sorry but on reflection understand now.0

I would not worry yourself some big shot giving it large trying to make something out of nothing. If he was that concerned he would have requested you to exchange details. Even if he reported you to the police they would laughter him off. He spoke with you end of matter in my opinion.0

If you knew you had hit the wing mirror, why didn't you stop in the first place?0

You say "nothing significant", which suggests that there was indeed damage, however slight. So, yes, you have committed a criminal offence.
However, as others have said, it's highly unlikely he'll report you and, even if he does, the police will usually take no action once you've exchanged details.0 -
Sorry bad wording, what I mean is there was no visible damage. I've just been reading similar stories but the wing mirror has been smashed in etc. But just to clarify I couldn't see any damage on it at all. It was literally a brush and the wing mirror didn't even move fully if that makes sense.0

If someone hit my car worth several thousand quid not even having the decency to come to see if there was any damage and apologise, instead wandering off into the shop like nothing had happened thinking a wave and miming the words sorry are sufficient then I think I'd be waiting to have some stern words too.
How you knew there was no damage when you didn't even have the common decency to go look I do not know.
What you did was incredibly rude, ignorant and self centred. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I know if I could go back I I would have gone about it differently. I'm not a confrontational person so was trying to avoid the chance of that.
I was right next to wing mirror in question as it was drivers side and was going so slowly as I said it barely moved. Not an excuse I know but was hoping a wave and saying sorry would be enough. On reflection it wasn't but that was my thinking at the time.0 -
If after me saying sorry like you did and someone had had a go at me, I wouldn't hold back and take it - do enough of that in work to customers.0

Tbf, the other driver was in his car at the time. He didn't have a go at OP as soon as it happened. Nor did he follow him into the shop. It seems to be OP's casual attitude to it that irked the other driver, which I think would probably irk any one of us tbh. But not confronting him immediately and not following him to confront him indicates tempers weren't flaring that high. So I think possibly the "go" you're imagining is not the "little go" OP was describing. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0
