Ringing home landline

Hi, I'm going to Jordan in October but will be needing to ring home to a landline. Any ideas on the cheapest way to do that ?
I was thinking hotel phone might be cheaper ?
Cheers.

Hotel phone would be the most expensive option possible...

    Skype will always be affordable.

Some of the Apps allow you to resolve to a landline, though usually you need to pay for this.

https://www.localphone.com also has a App for that.

Install the App and switch it to WiFi / 3G/4G calls mode to call using a mobile/WiFi where you are, together with credit from your Localphone account to resolve to a Localphone number.
They give you a little starter credit in order for you to test the service.

Viber Out is a similar service, but is more expensive.

Don't even think about using the hotel phone.

With Viber you can call any number when you add some credit (Viber Out), cheap and usually decent quality, Skype and WhatsApp probably similar.
    Evolution, not revolution
  • So if I get a local sim card and download these apps I can call a landline. I always thought it would have to be mobile to mobile with those type of things.

You don't even need a local SIM. It should work as long as you have stable WiFi available.

Skype calls to UK landlines are 1.8p a minute

Yes, don't even think about touching the hotel phone as the rates are extortionate. I was in a hotel recently and couldn't find my mobile so I rang it from the hotel phone. By time I found it (it had fallen down the side of the bed), the phone had gone to voicemail and that resulted in a bill for a few pounds due to the connection charge.

Now I know why they call you DoshWaster. :)

    LocalPhone is 0.5p per minute.
  • Ok thanks for replies. I take it you have to open a account but how do you pay. I'll work it out.

    Thanks.
