Cat scratching

One of my cats constantly scratches the stair carpet on any step he has a scratching post which he does use but still scratches on the stairs it's a rented house and its driving me crazy

Can you make a scratching post from a wooden box ( weighted with bricks ) and a piece of old / off-cut carpet ? Maybe it is the shape / colour / place they don't like.

Try to be nearby, with a water pistol or indoor plant sprayer (nozzle to jet). Mine, use to scratch the carpet in multiple places - now only one!!

If he is particularly fond of scratching the stairs, could you fix with tacks a piece of carpet, or even a cheap carpet pile doormat from the Poundshop to the bottom tread to encourage him to only scratch there? Perhaps even spray it with some of the spray stuff that is known as Play Spray for cats to attract him to this bottom tread only. This will protect the landlords stair carpet at least & can easily be removed when the time comes to move out.
