What to do with this fireplace?

Ok so we moved into our house a couple of months ago and it's generally in decent shape. Downstairs in the living room there was a really horrible 70s fireplace that for some reason took up loads of space and looked terrible.

Anyway, we've had that removed by the plasterer who has skimmed the walls and ceilings for us - he knocked it down hoping it was made of plaster or similar but it turned out to be concrete brick.

It's all gone and he's plastered the rest of it and it's all looking sharp but we're left with some odd looking concrete bits between the fireplace and the slab in front of the fireplace.

Any suggestions on what to do with this? I thought maybe box them in with wood somehow? Or attempt to chip them down further and fill them with something? I'm not very practical haha.

Photos attached....well I can't post links because I'm a new user so have added some spaces

What do you have in mind for the slab? Anything?

If you painted it you could just paint the cobbled bits the same colour.
  • Yeah we plan on painting it a lighter colour, we're getting a great carpet put down so probably a grey or white. I had thought about that, but I think I want a cleaner sharper finish, I'm not sure boxing them in would work?

what's happen with the rest of it.

New surround/mantle/fire or just getting left? makes a big difference to the options.

If just getting left a nice solid wood piece extending over the bricks( I probably would have taken them out) and into the alcove as a base for whatever happened next.

alternate to wood, stone/granite/tiles leaving a lip to the current slabs

if getting a fire(real/wood) a wood store either side would hide the mess.
