Looks like you can do Aberdeen to Penzance for as little as £51.70 - http://www.brfares.com/#faredetail?orig=ABD&dest=PNZ&rte=487&tkt=MES

And Wick to Aberdeen for as little as £14.80 - http://www.brfares.com/#faredetail?orig=WCK&dest=ABD&rte=446&tkt=VA3

Both with advanced tickets. Not a very scenic route, certainly not the quickest route, and the 12hr+ journey from Aberdeen not for the faint hearted! You'd see a lot of the country through the window, it stops almost everywhere: http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/P31007/2017/08/15

    That's great thanks.

I can travel for free on Virgin East & West Coast then I've got a TOC privilege card to get discount on all the other train operators so I'll have to look into costs.

I'm gonna have a look online to see if I can find the best scenic route.

If you want something bucket list worthy, how about cycling it?

How? - Nothing on that page seems to work.

I've been wanting to do that route for years but the cheapest direct ticket I can see on the XC site is a good bit dearer, although I'll be looking out for their sales.

That page was just a link to fares that exist for that route - suspect the very cheap ones are few and far between. There are a few railway ticketing experts who post here who may be able to shed some more light.

XC generally are very expensive to travel with unless you split tickets.

Prepare to be very disappointed with Lands End, unless you were expecting an amusement park by the sea. Anyone for the Shaun the Sheep Experience? Cape Cornwall, about 5 miles west, is infinitely more dramatic.
Still, at least arriving by bus you won't have to pay the extortionate car park fee (a fiver I think).

Seems pointless doing it by train. It's not as if it's a personal achievement when all you do is buy a ticket and then just sit there for a few hours. Walking or cycling, sure.
  • Yes, Lands End is a tacky amusement attraction, although you can walk to the Lands End cliffs from Sennen Cove. Visiting Cape Cornwall (as has already been said) is a must and Sennen Cove is small but beautiful with a lovely cafe on the sea front.
