Hi. Could anyone do the honours. I have been told it may be a poppy but as yet cannot find which one.

TIA

    Its evening primrose, not poppy.

We have had the same plants growing on a patch of spare land down the road but this one was taken at a bird reserve last weekend. I understand why my colleague thought it was poppy like but i was not convinced particularly by the lily like stem. That really has solved a mystery and proved that our local gardening dept at the council need to be retrained .Thanks again.

If they were ever trained in botany in the first place......

There is a much better, more refned, oenothera called longifolia, which I have grown for years, originally obtaining it from an elderly neighbour. This had acid yellow flowers and was hard to place, but just for once, the breeders improved it, so now I grow and sell 'Lemon Sunset.'

It's not as prolific in flower as T&M's picture, but then nothing ever is!

Interesting to note that this particular plant was found in an ex sand quarry!

Just the sort of place it would colonise, although it can compete with virtually anything if it has sunshine.

I murdered all of those growing here in 2010 and I still have seedlings coming up. I will introduce it into the wild garden next year, but it isn't returning to the cultivated one!
