Daddy long legs is a spider, i'm not sure how the name got applied to crane flies, but it seems to be a very British thing.

In America it is a spider, in other places it is a harvestman, in Britain it is a crane fly. The use of the name for a crane fly seems to have a pretty long history (older than the old US of A!) and since this is predominantly a British site, I think we can accept a natural bias in favour of the crane fly! :)
  • In New Zealand they are crane flies. The 'daddy long legs' name probably came about as they look like the spider of the same name. However, crane flies are insects and have 6 legs. A true daddy long legs is a spider, hence it has 8 legs.

  • My friend has a pest bye spider repellent thing she swears by. Makes some weird noise that would personally annoy me more than a spider... but if you hate them worth a shot?

Not had too many this year, thank goodness.

It's not the daddy long legs that cause the problems in this house - it's the damage done by the cat when she hurls herself around the room chasing the darn things!
