Just changed from a four year old vehicle with a 1.4 engine to a year old car with a 1.8 engine and got a rebate as my insurance decreased
  • Oh wow, lucky you.

I don't think I can afford a year old car but it's good to know that younger cars have cheaper insurance.

Supervisor at work had his 3 Month old Discovery written off.

They will write off anything if the repair value is more than they want to pay.

there is no way of ever telling if a car will be repaired or written off and a brand new car fresh out of the showroom could be involved in an accident and declared a total loss in the eyes of the insurance

I had a three year old car that was involved in an accident and it was declared a cat B write off that means car cant be repaired and should be broken for spares, the insurance company will look at the market value of a car and say it is deemed to be a thousand pounds and the damage will cost six hundred pounds to repair they will just want to write the car off as cost of repair and any extras like a hire car will end up costing them more than the actual value of the car

if your car is declared a total loss then you can take the pay out and then ask the insurance company if you can buy the car back off them and repair it yourself and run it as a cat d/c write off

so car gets written off you get paid out £600.00 buy back the salvage for £50.00 repair it with parts from a scrapyard for £100.00 and pocket the money that is left
