We have a 14 year old cat - that, all of a sudden has refused to use the cat flap - during the day - he does at night with no problems - could there be a reason for this ?

Maybe light shines through it at an odd angle. Does he refuses all day or any particular time? And when you say refuse - does that mean going out, coming back in, or both?
Your lucky, my cat only uses the cat-flap to come in, won't use it to go out - day or night!I used to work for Tesco - now retired - speciality Clubcard0 -
Some cats prefer the attention of a slave opening the door. I suspect your cat uses the catflap at night as you are asleep.

As he is getting older, is it possible that he is starting to find it harder to use it? particularly if there is a step up or down, and he is using it at night because he has to.
Or he may have had a nasty experience, possibly with another cat, and associates it with daytime use.
It might be worth going back to basics and propping it open for a bit like you do when teaching a cat to use a flap, to see if that helps him.All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)0 -
At 14 I would suspicious from arthritic changes, or any issues with reduced sight.
Both would reduce your Cats ability to use a cat flap. Have they been drinking or jrinating more?NOT a NEWBIE!

At 14, he may be more comfortable with an indoor litter tray.0
