Incorrect Default

Hi all!

Really need some help. I was contacted by a debt collecting agency asking I owe them just under £300 for a Vodafone contract I had a couple of years ago. I contacted Vodafone for them to tell me the breakdown of this cost. After being on hold for 30-40mins, I was told that there was a billing error and I do not owe them a penny!!!

Now, I have been informed that this has defaulted on my credit score! How do I go about getting this cleared from my credit score, if I can? :(

    Hi hollyroses

When Vodafone confirmed you did not owe anything, did they mean you did not owe anything to them or the debt collection agency (DCA)? It’s possible their system shows you don’t owe them anything because the debt has been sold on to the DCA. You may need to clarify this with them. If they admit there is no debt full stop then they need to inform the DCA.

With regards to the default on your credit file, you should argue that needs to be removed if you did not default on the contract. However if you did default (fall behind on payments) and then cleared the debt at a later date the default could still be valid. In which case, it will remain on your credit file for 6 years.

It’s advisable to check all 3 credit reference agencies yourself to see what is showing on your credit file.

Telecoms providers quickly dispose of delinquent accounts that have not been paid, they sell them on to various debt purchasing companies, who then chase you for the balance.

It will show as settled on the Vodaphone system as the debt was sold on, you are obviously aware of the debt, and if its genuinely owed, it wont go away.

Send the "provit letter" to the DCA, adapt it to your situation, see what they come back to you with.
