Closing A&L Savings Account

I wanted to close my A&L DirectSaver, having cleared out all but £1 on Monday (not having been allowed to take out the final £1 online).
Rather than pay for an 0870* call for an unspecified amount of time, I decided to try to close it today in a branch which I was visiting any way.
I was unable to do so because their (as far as customers are concerned it appears) unwritten rules are that you have to provide ID (driving licence, passport that sort of thing) in order to close an account in a branch.
As I didn't have to visit a branch or telephone to open the account, I am at a loss as to why I needed to provide ID to get them to transfer £1 to my linked account. I didn't want to walk away clutching £1 in my greasy palm, just wanted to get the £1 out of A&L and into an external account.)
* With thanks to milarky who mentioned this in another thread, I shall now try phoning 08000 688 638 to see if I can close it by phone by that route.

Phone should work fine. That's how I closed my old A&L savings accounts.0

You can always use the telephone in the A & L branch. This is what I have done on two occasions when I wanted to close accounts and would not use the 0870 number. They even allowed me to use one of the private little offices where they conduct interviews.0

I have used 0800 0688638 successfully before to close an A+L account. Select option 2 to speak to a human being.0

Thanks. I've used that option in Northern Rock to re-establish access to my account online but the A&L branch was so busy on Saturday I don't think they had any spare phones (and I didn't have all my details that I would need for a phone closure).0 -

Thanks.
It's the number milarky had given too and I tried using it yesterday afternoon - you need to keep selecting the option 2 for a number of drills down through the system.
Unfortunately the real people work until 1 pm on Saturdays and start again on Monday mornings!0
