New barclays account

Hi everyone,

I recently applied for a Barclays account and I received an email with the following;

"you'll need to book an appointment with one of our community bankers who'll be able to explain the outcome of your application."

What does this mean? Has my application already been declined? If so, why do I need to go in?

Sorry, it's just the idea of going in to branch and being declined really makes me feel embarrassed.

    I doubt they would get you to see one of their staff if you were declined. You may however have been offered a basic account rather than full.
    Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.

    You really shouldn't feel embarrassed, whatever the outcome. Banks have very strange ways of working and their decisions sometimes seem nothing more than random. Last year I was refused any credit limit increase on one credit card, so applied for a new one with a different bank and was immediately given a 4500 credit limit. They were both using the same data about me, but made two entirely different decisions.

    The same thing applies to current accounts. Sometimes it is more about what kind of new customers a bank wants to get, it isn't just about your financial circumstances. :)

    I'd imagine it's just them taking an opportunity to upsell you services that you probably have no need of.

    This is far more likely. Nowadays regard bank branch staff as little more than sales staff.

    Was the initial application made online?

    If so, probably they'll want to get a copy of your signature. They'll also want to flesh out the information they hold on file for you, and see if you want any other services - don't worry, many of these (such as the digital channels) are free. They may even sign you up for cashback if you're eligible.

    Call them up and ask about it. Use the pretext that you want to know if there's any paperwork you need to bring along.

    They asked me the same, and as has been suspected by a couple of posters, it was to try and sell me stuff I didn't want. They were pleasant enough though when they realised there was nothing I wanted apart from the current account.
