Santander balance query

Dear All,
Many moons ago, I had an account with Santander.
Over the last 3 years I have received a statement about an account and I just always chucked it in the bin.
The last one I received, I opened it up and it said the amount of the last statement then it said the amount of this statement.
Obviously they are both the same amount. It says no credits and no debits. It then says balance £970. Does that mean there is £970 sitting in the account or does it mean I owe £970?
Thanks, Simon

If the balance is £970 which you've presumably added at some point in the past or added amounts to build up to that amount and you've added and withdrawn nothing else and had no or sod all interest, then that will be what is in the account.
If you own a bank £970 they'd have chased you through the courts for it long by now I 'd have thought.0 -
Just for anyone receiving a similar statement as to I have:
This is apparently a debt! Despite it looking as if money is in the account.
When I spoke to this department they could not see any details of why I would owe this money nor can they access any statements. So in my case they have written it off (nothing shows on my credit file).
On a personal note, I don't believe I owe said money and assume they are accrued bank charges for what ever reason.0
