Mp3

Previously posted on "I want" ... maybe a better response here? Don't make me post it in the Arms!

I am totally ignorant about MP3 players, so I don't even know if such a thing exists, but I want a MP3 player that I can take to the gym and on my bike, and plug into my car, my hifi and my PC. I want to download tunes, and store my existing music collection.

Any suggestions? Anyone?

Thanks. Would I be restricted to downloading from iTunes though? I don't really understand these things.:o

  • Sounds like yours would get a lot of wear and tear and iPods are not renowned for being easily (or cheaply) repaired. They are noted for being easily damaged if handled (sometimes, not so) roughly.

Plugging into your car is something to think about in detail: does your car have a plug where you can connect the MP3 player to it? Some do, but most don't. In this case, you'd need one of those small FM transmitters to make the link.

In terms of being cost effective, I'd recommend Creative MP3 players above iPods. They're more robust, and cheaper. The only thing they don't have is the iPod name and the perceived 'style factor' that goes with that.

You're not restricted to just iTunes with an iPod, anymore than you are prevented from using iTunes with any other make of player. iPods are more focused on iTunes, though, and sometimes it takes a bit of experimentation (and manual reading) to explore wider sources.

Thanks for that - will have a look at the Creative players. Practicality and good quality & value are much more important than style for me. But I really do want it to do all of the above. I don't think my car has anything to plug it into lol.

IMHO, look for a previous generation (non video) 8Gb iPod Nano. Because iPods dominate the market, you have wider choice of cases and accessories for docks to plug into your hi-fi.

So long as it's not protected WMA format files, iPod should play it. Run iTunes and just drag'n'drop your files, iTunes can also rip any CDs you own.
