USB 2.0 are what you would call "normal" usb ports
USB 3.x are the same shape connector but tend to be blue inside, these ports are much faster

USB C is the new shape of plug, that can be inserted either way around, like the iphone "firewire" or whatever its called

By normal you mean common for past 10 or so years as before USB 2 there was of course USB 1 and 1.1 which the PS2 console had and original Xbox but had a custom adaptor on the end.

USB 2 ports normally have blue internals (having just checked both my desktop and laptop). USB 3 is normally red (well, at least on Toshiba, HP and ASUS kit anyway).

Mind you, there is no standard colour scheme, so the ports could all be black if the manufacturer chose.

I wonder if that's a Toshiba thing, because as AndyPix says blue is normally the colour for USB3 (which is the case on the Samsung I'm using now)..

On my work Dell laptop (M6800) all the USB ports are black. Then again, they are all USB3 anyway so there's no need to differentiate.

Yes - Is that different from your definition of the word ?

Interesting .. Can i ask , do they still have the little "ss" symbol on them ??

Edit : Just looked at one of our newer latitudes, they are all USB 3 but do indeed have black internals - They do display the ss sign though

Except nobody has answered the question about how to tell which is which - particularly an issue for standard size USB 2 and 3 sockets, where the only visible difference seems to be what colour they are inside - I think I'm right in saying that USB3 sockets have blue internals (I had a brief look through the Wiki article and I didn't see that information there).
Too brief a look - it's right at the start of the item. Everything you are likely to want to know is in that WiKi linked to in post #2
...Also, there are 5 modes of USB data transfer, in order of increasing bandwidth: Low Speed (from 1.0), Full Speed (from 1.0), High Speed (from 2.0), SuperSpeed (from 3.0), and SuperSpeed+ (from 3.1);....(SuperSpeed is identified by blue).

Yes - they all have SS on them. One also has a lightning flash, which means it's an always-powered port as I recall.

Obviously missed that, but clearly it's not as straightforward as "...identified by blue" given the alternatives mentioned in this thread. Although the SS symbol, which I didn't know about, looks like a good way of doing it(as long as I have my glasses with me so I can actually read it!).
