Sky Q or Sky Plus - Opinions please?

Hi all

I'd be really grateful for some feedback (positive or negative) on Sky Q. We currently have Sky Plus HD (Multiroom) and, after ringing Sky for a small fault on one of the boxes, were offered Sky Q (which we knew we would be). Very briefly, we currently have 4 boxes (2 of them are mainly used for watching pre-recorded programmes as we have 2 children with autism who watch the same programmes over and over).

I'm usually of the opinion that if something's not broke, don't try to fix it (ie, stick with Sky Plus) but would be interested in hearing from anyone who has changed from Sky Plus to Sky Q.

Thanks.

  • Sky Q is much better in my opinion. Everything is stored/recorded centrally on your main box, but can be accessed from any of them. I have a Sky Q 2TB box and one multiscreen box and haven't had any issues.

There is a difference in the contract, meaning Sky own the boxes and you lease them, so if there are any issues they will replace them for free for the duration of your contract.

The downside of that is that if you leave you wont be able to receive Freesat without shelling out for your own satellite box.

If you only take the 2TB box they also charge you a non-refundable 'setup' fee which jumps from £20 to £199 so you're not only 'leasing' them but paying a big deposit too. You could take multiroom of course which reduces the one off fee to just £85 for one additional box but it'll cost you an extra £216 over the minimum 18 month contract. At least they charge you more than £20 per mini box after that (up to 4 mini boxes?)

Another downside (I believe) is that you need decent fibre BB as it downloads programmes in the background constantly (is there a way to curtail that?)

Edit: prices quoted are for new customers.

Couldn't they keep their current box to use for that if need be?

They change your LNB for one which doesn't work with your old box, unless you tell them not to when you get Sky Q fitted.

It does not unless you select it to download a box set.

Just ask for a Hybrid LNB, six outputs two for Sky Q and four for other Sky or Freesat devices.

I was going off what someone claimed in another thread.

Of course they could (given the caveat given earlier about the LNB), my comment was more generalised rather than a direct reply to the OP.

One of my ex colleagues has just "upgraded" to Q . I'd prewarned him about the hybrid LNB situation, but the Sky fitter told him that he wasn't allowed to fit a hybrid -only the Q compatible LNB!! He refused the installation and is now in ongoing discussions with Sky, who are threatening to charge him for Q even tho' he is still using the old system.

I wouldn't mind that the equipment was loaned but would not pay the fairly large extra monthly cost. We have no use for all the specials; just a dish, box that records ,stops,'winds' etc, with no need for viewing in another room, as we have Freeview pvr and a mini aerial with the upstairs tv.

Wouldn't their own PVRs suit the children with special needs ?
