Student Bank Account

My son who is a mature student cannot get a student bank account because of previous bad credit. He starts uni in Sept what other options does he have. He already has a co-op Cashminder account.

The student loan can be credited to the Co-op account? He has a debit card? He can make payments through internet banking?

If so, does he need another account?

Why does he need a student bank account? If it's for the free overdraft then he won't get one if he has a bad credit history. Surely the account he already has will accept any student loans he gets?
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.

That's what I have told him
  • I had this exact same trouble a few years ago. Although at the time I had an HSBC account with £200 overdraft,. Which was something at least.

The only answer is to rely on student loads/maintenance grants and try and get a job, for extra income where possible. But his cashminder account will happily take his money.

Also, not going out and spending it all on booze and partying will also be a help.

To be honest, I'm glad I didn't get one now as it would be more debt I had to pay off when I finished my degree.
