  • Try this, Go to Kellys Korner

Scroll down to Line 195, download and run Restore Desktop and Taskbar on the right hand side of that line

copy to a floppy or flash drive, it's very small

Just had the same problem and this is what worked for me. Turn power off on comp for at least 30 sec's. Start comp in safe mode by pressing F8 on my comp,(yours may be different)as comp is starting up. When in safe mode use arrow keys to highlight start comp with last known working configuration (or words to that effect) and press enter. Comp should restart and your desktop should be back.

Thanks for all the help so far
but so far nothing has worked
I guess my copy of the error reporting hasn't produced any knowledgeable solutions either
It looks like its going to have to be a complete hard drive format and windows reinstall

The fact that this PC will boot AOK in to Safe Mode and is "hanging" when booting up normally, coupled with some of the event log errors you have posted, indicates to me a problem with your networking.

You mention that you have a wireless connection in this PC, do you also have an ethernet card?

Have any changes occurred in your networking setup in the past few days?

When the PC is booting up and taking an age, it sounds to me like it is attempting to gain a TCP/IP address (Hence the DHCP error) and therefore not going any further until it has attempted to resolve the lack of network connectivity.

Let us know some more details about how your PC connects ....
    GC - March 2024 -
  • Could you start the PC in Safe mode and then do a full anti virus check
  • Safe Mode is a good place to start out - initially try the top-most "Safe Mode" option in the F8 menu. If you get a desktop there, it's most likely a duff driver or one of your startup tasks.

Do you have a proper XP CD? If so, you could try doing a repair install. Failing that, whip the hard drive out, connect it to another PC, copy all your stuff over and reformat and reinstall. Drastic but it'll work.
