Forestry Commission and some larger estates will grant a scavenger license, which allows you to collect fallen timber (subject to various conditions).

I thought they had stopped this years ago?

I looked into the Forestry Commission scavenging licences three or four years ago and the scheme had stopped then. Of course, it may have restarted.

    It was regional too.

Thought I'd pop back and update. ...
I bought my little cottage and immediately smashed my fireplace to bits... I needed to make the opening higher and build myself a hearth as I really didn't like the quarry tile hearth that was there...
The flue bits cost 390 quid, hearth bits about 40 quid, log burner was 130, extra odds n sods about 50 quid....
I also had the chimney swept beforehand for 40 quid. Chimney sweep also inspected chimneys using a camera so I had him back after I'd fitted it for him to inspect
He also did smoke tests while he was here.... that was another 40.
He advised that to be technically within regs, my hearth needed to stick out another 2 inches and I needed to put an air brick in but otherwise he said no problems.
I don't have a surround yet so have put some non combustible board between my burner and the chimney breast.... Which was about 80 quid.
And we have been toasting happily ever since.
The 9 kw fire does get a bit much but we just open the door after a few hours and the heat then goes upstairs!
So... very roughly 800 smackers to go from an inefficient open fire to a cracking log burner which we absolutely love and is the heart of our home.
    Pleased with that!
