Still repaying tax credit overpayment the first year

I'm looking for some advice about repaying tax credit overpayments please. The over payments happened the first year of the benefit when a lot of people were vastly overpaid. This was before it was possible to find out how much we were actually meant to get so thought it was just a generous thing!

Fast forward a decade plus and I'm still paying it back £50 a month, from the top of my head it will continue until 2021 or something. I'm getting sick of it so wondered whether there's a way to clear it sooner ie. make a much lower offer to clear it :embarasse ? Is there a clever way to get out of paying it? I need to save all the money I can and this would make quite a difference!

Thanks for any help.

OP I've never known them to accept a lower offer. If you didn't agree that you should be repaying it then the time to act would have been when you were first notified of it. Any appeal or dispute process would be out of time.
