This all reads very similar to a thread on the In my Home DIY forum. Is it the same plumber OP?

Yes. I did put a link to that thread. On this page, I was hoping for the legal angle.

Actually this is sounding like fraud.
After many years posting on mse I suggest you check out the company on companies house if they are limited.
Try directors names plus " director" and town and endole

If you are not sure, google ALL
the information you have on them.

Didn't even know about Company House. Thanks for that information.

I just searched for this plumbing company and found it. Got the director's name and address. I'll have to write a letter.

Nothing you can do about the amount as you agreed to that, but... the plumber needs to finish the job to a satisfactory standard, and you need to let him have the chance to do that.

WRITE (email fine) to the plumber listing the problems and asking him to complete the job within 14 days.

If he fails to do this, then you can take legal action.

Thanks for that advice. I'm going to write a letter.

If you use Endole to search I find it quite user friendly , it will show you if he's ever run any other companies if you click on his name.
Send the letter registered or get proof of postage
Give him a deadline to respond by.

Send a letter, pen and paper and get proof of posting from post office, not registered as he can refuse to sign or accept it. A posted letter is assumed to have been delivered.

    Simple.
    The quotation was for £2160.
The OP paid £200 deposit leaving £1960 to pay yet the company concerned took two payments totalling £2160 meaning that they took £200 too much and despite being asked on a few occasions, have failed to repay the money.
As they had no legal right to take the full £2160 from the OP's bank account, they made a false declaration to the bank when claiming this money.
