Do you claim tax credits of child benefit? Or does it say if it related to tax?

What department of HMRC? The letter should give you some indication on what they want to know, what does it say?

    Indv and small business compliance
Undertaking a review of income tax position
I understand you may of been in receipt of income and I cannot see that this source of income has been declared to hmrc

Is the letter to you or your wife? You said "we got a letter" but if it's for income tax it will be to an individual.

Of the letter address to your wife what income does she have? What disability benefits? Any pensions?

Is she registered for self assessment?

What information and documents have they requested?

Has she had any of those income sources since 2010? To be honest we'd only just be guessing on here, they'll have some reason to believe that she has income she isn't declaring so you'd be best to speak to them direct and try to figure out what information they have.
