Of course this could all be solved with a national ID card. ;)

I'm in the same boat as I want to open a Coventry account but would need to send my passport to them. What with all the recent problems with Royal Mail striking I'm naturally a bit dubious about using them, special delivery or not. :(

I'm not sure that a national ID card would solve anything. They will probably be forged so quickly that no bank or building society would accept one without the supporting evidence of passports, driving licences, bank statements etc. I think common sense has flown out of the window as far as banks implementing Money Laundering legislation is concerned.

This is getting bloody ridiculous. I'm all for preventing fraud, but there's no way I'm paying out money to prove my identity, and there's no way I'm sending original documents through the mail only to find two weeks later they've gone missing and being sold on some street corner.

I have read somewhere that Job Centres will certify documents free of charge..

An example of the FSA requirements being unclear are that most firms will send you back the certified copy of your passport (mine cost £5 - bloody lawyers ;)) but I have had the experience of a small BS hanging onto the original under the false impression that the FSA required that they could not take copies of copies.

I have checked with the solicitor recently and only 1/5 of the firms I have opened accounts with in the last six months have 'phoned / faxed him to confirm the certification.
