If you do want to remove the harddrive, it is literally as simple as two screws to remove the harddrive and the mount. Then another four screws to detach the harddrive from the mount and the deed is done.
Don't make the mistake of installing Windows 7 without completely erasing the drive first. It is still possible to find files from the previous installation, with the right tools and a small amount of perseverance. This is because the installer will only perform a quick format.
If you want to do it properly, just erase the entire drive with something like KillDisk to zero the entire surface.0 -

They intend to utilise KillDisk or DBAN. or another low level format tool, such as HDD Guru
This is best if they are handing the HDD on.0 -
No need to smash anything up, just remove the HDD. That is where any and all data is stored.
You can choose to spend £4 on an external caddy for the HDD, once removed.
Then you can utilise it as a portable drive.
What is the Service Tag or Express Code of the laptop? It's written on the underside.
This^
I just remove the hard drive and bin or Ebay the rest of it, a few years back I got £50 on Ebay for an old Advent Laptop which had a broken screen and no hard drive, I still have the hard drive which has stuff on it from 2008 and 2009.I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world0 -
Bit of a shame and a waste smashing up a laptop with a hammer just because it's surplus to your requirements. You should have considered donating it to someone who was in need of a basic laptop who couldn't afford to purchase new.
All you needed was to format the drive with a 7 pass (or 35 pass if it makes you feel better) security erase. Or just remove the drive and donate the rest of the laptop. Smashing it up with a hammer is just absurd.0 -
