Cheapest way to do fly-drive holiday to Philadelphia

We are thinking of going over to Philly to see some friends there (my husband and I and our 3 year old daughter). They have a big enough house for us to stay in but we would need a car for that bit of independence.

Our options are:
a) flydrive to Philadelphia for 7 days (can't find anyone at the moment doing this cheaply like florida etc...)

b) cheapo flights to philly and hire a car out there for 7 days

c) flydrive to New York or Washington and drive up to Philly (2-3 hours I believe) (again for 7 days)

We have around £520 worth of clubcard vouchers and will probably increase this by the time of booking but I can't see any way of doing this with Virgin or Cosmos (must be accomodation holiday to use clubcard and these look very expensive to NY or Washington to then drive to Philly for a few days in the middle).

Would prefer to go in the Summer school holidays 2008 or in Easter 2008 as my husband is a school teacher (boo yah sucks to trying to find good deals in school holidays)

Anyone got any ideas?

A friend of mine always flies to Canada first- the car hire and flights are cheaper there than new york state. Fly into Toronto with CanadianAffair, depends on whether they fly from your local airport.

8 hour drive, but you could have a night in Niagara Falls then drive the next day?
However, the Canadian Dollar is really low at the moment, so it depends on who you book with.

  • there's nearly always offers to fly to new york for travel during august. i'd book the flights and worry about booking the car hire after..

I'm hoping if we can get flights for around £250 each, that will be £750 and car hire should only be a couple of hundred quid at most...
