With your 25 years of proper IT experience, you have been through and disabled all unecessary services that auto start by default haven't you?

Yeah -- disabling Indexing and System Restore should speed things up a bit for starters.

Let's be honest if the OP had that all experience he would not be asking these questions but instead would be answering them from others to help them. I think the reality is he is a Walter Mitty.

Yes win 7 (32 bit) will work on 512MB but i hope the HDD is fast because it will use the pagefile a LOT.

I think the 64bit version needs more RAM, Although they do say 64bit is faster on low spec machines?

It does need a lot more RAM and would be constantly paging on a 512MB machine. A GB is enough to get it going and have an application or two running.

She's decided that the machine is too slow and has a severe lack of storage for her needs and is now looking for a new replacement
I have found http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/asus-x556ua-15-6-laptop-black-10146348-pdt.html which appears to be a bargain - but at PC World (I know !) are out of stock
    Any alternatives ?

    Your posts are comedy gold.

Someone coming from AMD Sempron 3400+ with 512MB of RAM and an 80GB PATA HDD, does not need i7-6500U, 12 GB of RAM and 2TB of storage.

It never existed at that price on PC World.

Just about any current laptop will meet those requirements.

First steps are to set a budget and decide on screensize. The other thing to wonder about is is that really all - what about watching videos? That will require a better quality screen than simple web browsing if disappointment is to be avoided.
