You get hedge trimmers that'll cut thick branches. Mine will do over an inch.
Yes, my petrol ones will for sure.

Went for this in the end!

Taken about 3h so far to get about a quarter of the hedge cut back - and that's without bagging up/taking to the tip.

Bought purely because it was the cheapest, largest tooth trimmer I could find. It's doing an ok job so far but it's heavy. But what do you expect for £35!!

Also bought a little coppicing saw from Lidl. To cut through the large branches. Much harder job than I wanted it to be but guess it's just one of those things you need to get sorted...

Glad you're gettin there. It's hard to get jobs done quickly with domestic tools, but once done it'll be easy to keep it at that height in future.

Haha thanks - yes getting there... slowly! Spent 3h cutting it back both last night and tonight - about half way there! Now the problem is how to get rid of all the branches! I think it'll take about 6 trips to the tip.

It's a shame that the previous owner didn't keep on top of it - I've had to decimate it to get it back to a reasonable size - hope it grows back.

Also kudos to all those recommending a coppicing saw - surprisingly effective if not a little hard work!

I recently had a similar hedge situation. He cut his hands on the branches, littered everything, but did his work. Here I bought a saw, everything arranged for me, the pros and cons, buyer's guide of bestchainsawadviser.com/ were described in detail.
