Just to mention to the OP that you can also buy cheap cuts of meat and with a slow cooker they come out absolutely tender and delicious so it's not just about steak.

indeed some diced stewing steak chucked into the slow cooker with some onions, mushrooms and a slurp of red vino make a delicious meal with the gravy as thick as you can make it ;) Although tonight's dinner will be a steak that I bought about two months ago y/s and frozen, think it cost me £2.80 and I will have it with a heap of salad stuff and some pepper sauce on top.

We have 2 freezers and quite a lot of meat in them. Mostly reduced/yellow stickers or special offers. Our local butchers had whole beef fillets for ~ £30 and we got 9 portions from it. A while ago Morrisons was selling beef joints for £4 kg which is silly money. We bought quite a lot and cut some of them into chunks for casseroles/curries (plus my favourite made totally from scratch beef rendang which is sublime). Minced some to get lean mince for HM burgers, chilli, bolognaise etc and you know exactly what's in it. I roasted one and it was very tender, I sliced it and froze the slices in HM gravy for ~ £1 a portion, quick and easy mid week roast.

Beef doesn't have to be expensive.
