Cost of meat

Steak has always been expensive.
Cheap sausages are available still but I think there has been a general switch to better quality (80% meat or more) sausages and this is reflected in the range and price in supermarkets.
In general sausages are cheaper than burgers, then mince, then chicken, then pork, then beef steak is most expensive
Really?
At 42% or 43% meat content I wouldn't waste my money on them.
I agree there's lots of choice now of high meat content sausages of various flavours.0 -

High processed crap like "Fry's schnitzel's" (ingredients below) is cheap because it is not.
I'm not sure you could even consider that a list of ingredients. A 'formula', perhaps!0 -
I think on the Richmond sausage advert it says something like 'the nation's favourite'.

Can't understand it myself. Wouldn't touch 'em with a long barge pole.
Richmond 8 Thick Pork Sausages 454G contain 42% pork and cost £2.00 in Tesco. Walls Classic 8 Pork Sausages 454G contain 70% pork and cost £2.10.
Both Richmond and Walls sausages are made by the same company, Kerry Foods. I suspect they make a lot more money flogging Richmond sausages than they do with Walls. That extra 10p gets you a lot more pork.
P.S. Other sausages are available.0 -
You can see here that steak prices in UK supermarkets have gone up from on average £17.06 to £20.50 over the past 12 months, whilst prices for joints, braising beef, mince and burgers have ended up more or less flat.

I buy steak every week and I am not rich
I'm no longer a meat eater, but used to eat steak weekly, and still buy enough each month so that other family members can eat it weekly. I'm not rich, either
Edited to add: meat is one of my biggest expenses when it comes to the grocery budget, though. There is something delicious about writing the first words of a story. You never quite know where they'll take you - Beatrix Potter0 -
Poor as church mice and still can afford steak when we fancy it
Got 3 good sized 28 day matured sirloin steaks last week, £12 and it was money well spent for a quality bit of meat. Now my good sized wouldn't be everyone's , some might think a tad on the small size. But you only need a small portion of good quality protein. And I'd rather have smaller portion sizes then lower quality
Meat and fish are the biggest expense in our grocery budget but shopping wisely, not wasting anything, it's not unmanageable. So we had expensive steak one day, the next we had some lovely Basa filets I'd picked up reduced to 70p a pack0 -
We rarely eat red meat but if we do it's usually good quality steak. Ribeye from my farm shop works out about £5 each, fillet is about £29 per kilo. I dont think it's expensive, it's good for you and contains healthy fats. I'd rather eat worms than Quorn. I once Googled what it is and how it's made, i won't be eating it any time soon.0

Most of the information & advice that appears on here will relate to the UK.0 -
i managed to buy some reduced in price sausages in M&S with 83% pork content They cost me 1.65 for 8 which is four meals for me I usually eat two bangers with mash and veg so the whole meal probably costs me around a pound including veg.
I like to treat myself now and agin to some Aberdeen Angus steak, usually when its on offer in Sainsbobs and will spend about £10 on some, but that will get portioned up, and when I cook a piece it will get a darned good wallop with my wooden mallet, so a portion will cost me a tad over three quid. Decent meat in smaller portions is fine for me as I like to load up with extra veg or salads to bulk it out. I read somewhere that an ideal portion of meat should be about the size of the palm of your hand and thats enough0
