Fed up with the incessant blue screen interrupting me to say windows needs to update. OK - it gives you some limited ability to schedule the update for the next day or so, but how can I turn this process off?

I know updates are important, and will happily do a regular, manual update when it suits me as I used to with earlier windows - but can't see any option for this.

You can't turn it off. This is because lots of people turned off updates and then complained that they got infected with nasties which would have had no effect if they were up to date. To prevent this and increase security Windows updates cannot be turned off in Windows 10.

Set up your active hours to suit you to stop updates trying to install when you use the computer. The active hours function is for preventing your issue when you are using the computer.

The ultimate solution is to set up a WSUS server and only permit updates that you want. This gives you complete control, but it is not a trivial task..

I think it's more so that Microsoft only have to support the latest build with all updates installed.

By not supporting partially-updated systems, they'll save a lot of time in testing and debugging.
