This coming week is National Identity Fraud Prevention Week (8 to 16 October).

This morning on BBC Radio 4's, Nigel Evans MP (Chair of the All Party Group looking into ID Fraud) and Sandra Quinn from APACs discussed the ID Theft Problem and The All Party Group's idea of an ID Fraud Tsar.

Most of the Problems they raise have a simple solution.

To deter ID Theft (Application FraudJ) visit www.freeidprotection.co.uk

Quotes:

Robert Goodwill MP - His idea is vastly cheaper than the proposed Government ID cards, which are estimated to cost between Pounds 90 and Pounds 300 per person.

Barry Stamp CE of Annual Credit Report: “The Advantage of Mr. Jamieson’s system are two fold. It will reach ALL lenders and not just CIFAS members. It’s cheaper.”

Equifax boss Neil Munroe said: "This is an excellent idea. It offers people effective protection against fraud."

IF it's for YOU go for it. Crooks or Lenders don't have an option!

    James,

But this doesnt actually stop identity fraud, it just makes it easier for people to get away with defrauding banks

Firstly people could just set up accounts and put anyones thumbprint on it and then claim its all fraud with their defence ready made

As for the fingerprint being their to catch the person you actually need to get the police to give a stuff first to bother investigating it and secondly the print would need to be one known to them

All and intelligent person will do is get someones print who is untraceable, a tourist, another national etc and put that down and then they are covered

So basically all your plan does is make it harder for banks to prevent people abusing the system and defrauding them and hence it will not work or be rolled out at any level

Part of fraud prevention measures is also to stop people lying and defrauding banks by fraudulently claiming fraud and all this does is make it easier for them

If your the genuine victim of an identity fraud the banks will sort it out for you anyway, but if your not this so called revolutionary plan will just make it easier for you to get away with it

TBH I dont think having to provide a thumbprint is going to stop the people who carry out this sort of fraud, they will just find one which is unknown to the authorities and use that

So your plan is all win for conmen and all lose for the banks:rolleyes:

I can see that being popular

Does the concept work? (Click on to anything in blue to go to article)

Credit Card Fraud and Cheque Fraud down by 81%. Theft of purses and handbags down by 54.5%.

Not 1 Incident of Fraud in 5 Years.

Car Hire Companies Use the System (in addition to licences, credit cards, passports) to deter theft of rented cars.

Petrol Retailers to deter can't pay, won't pay customers.

And of course most U.S. Banks insisit non customers use this concept for cheque cashing and have done for many years.

Now can you imagine a credit card that when the Chip and or magstip is interrogated it instructed the retailer, bank etc that the Cardholder either, Thumbprinted, PIN AND Thumbprinted or Signed and PRINTED. Bet it would fright off a few crooks.

If you have a better, simpler, cheaper or more effective proven solution to an ever increasing problem, please let us all know.
  • hope I'm not being off-topic, re: security.

can security be improved on cards by removing the 3-digit CVV code?
on-line transactions require that number, so I thought if I made a note of it, and then removed it from the card, I am reducing potential fraud if my card is lost/stolen.

however, I would be tampering with the signature-strip, and potentially damaging the card.

    juts an idle thought....

I wasn't aware of the following, but the Home Office website points victims of ID Theft in the direction of CIFAS Protective Registration costing £11.75 per year and is password based.

CIFAS, the UK's fraud prevention service, already provides a degree of protection for consumers against identity theft. However, CIFAS members only account for about 250 of the 4,000 lenders in the UK.

    www.freeidprotection.co.uk reaches ALL lenders.
