Tap top the wrong way round?

Bristan rio basin taps, asked the plumber today to change the cartridges while he here for my boiler service.
Now I can't be 100% sure, but I'm fairly certain that to turn the tap on used to be anti-clockwise and off was clockwise. This is still the case for the hot tap but the cold is now the other way round. Nearly flooded the place trying to work out why it wouldn't turn off till I realised I was trying to force it the wrong way!

So is it possible to fit them either way, or I am imagining that for the last 5 years my hand was turning the tap the other way round?

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

    I have the same problem.
My cross-head taps were supplied with 1/4 -turn right-hand thread.
    (Clockwise = close: Anti-clockwise = open)
The replacement ceramic disc cartridges were correct for cold, but opposite sense for hot.
This is to do with being compatible with lever taps.
Although disturbing, we are never more than 1/4 -turn away from success.

Love it. The very definition of glass half-full optimism!

I think they are probably designed for levers, which would be : parallel when off, and move symmetrically opposite when on.

They are known as hospital taps so that doctors/nurses could turn them off using elbows moving both levers towards the centre. I had a similar issue when I changed taps in my bathroom and have a long dialogue with the suppliers. It is possible to obtain the correct taps, just ask the person who fitted them, he/she will have to buy replacement innards. They probably just assumed you had hospital taps.

Bought them myself from a plumbers merchant but I used the part numbers specified for my type of tap on the Bristan website so I'm not sure why I've ended up with lever tap ones instead. Will have to double check in future.
