Default help please

Hi there,
Apparently Barclaycard sent me a letter back in June to tell me that I had a month to settle my arrears or my account would go into default.
I never received this letter and have since had my account placed into default. I have contacted Barclays but they are refusing to remove the default.
I entered into a DMP a few months ago and they are claiming that this is the reason for the default, but surely if I never received the letter I should have some reason to fight the default?
Does anyone have any advice please?
Thank you.

Not if they can evidence sending it.

Regardless, if you're in a DMP, a default is neither here nor there, so I wouldn't worry.

    Hi beccal21

If you’ve not been paying the monthly contractual payment (which we know will be the case if you are in a DMP), Barclaycard will be within their rights to register a default on your credit file. They normally do this when the arrears are between 3 to 6 months.

They must also send you a default notice (this is different to registering a default on your credit file) if you've paid less than the contractual payment. You could ask them to send a copy of this again but it won’t make a difference to the default on the credit file I’m afraid.

One other thing to note, it’s not a good idea to be in a fee charging DMP. If your provider is charging you a fee, get in touch with one of the free debt advice agencies for advice on how to change to one that won’t charge you.

  • Hi,

I wonder if you can help me Vodafone have a default on my credit file with an outstanding balance of over £1300, long story short I got a contract out with them for a friend and every month was getting charged for going over the data allowance (see on watchdog lots of customers were having this problem with Vodafone) my friend decided not to pay anymore so I got lumbered with the debt! I couldn't afford it and it went to a debt collector, which I agreed to make payment plan with for £10 a week to clear the debt which I was paying! On the 14th March this year I phoned the debt collectors to see how much was outstanding and they said my account had been closed on October 2016 and I need to get back to Vodafone to pay the rest to them, so I spoke to Vodafone on live chat, and was told the account is closed I need to go back to debt collectors, which I said they said same thing about them, the person I was talking to then said that as the debt collectors have closed the account there is no outstanding payment and I don't need to pay anything (I have the evidence as I had the chat emailed to me) but the default is still on my credit file, how do I get this removed! Thanks in advance x

You can't. The bills weren't paid, you defaulted.

Should have started your own thread.

I dont understand why take out a contract for your friend ?

Theres other options your friend could have used.

As for the default it stays as its a true account of how you ran the financial account despite your friend decided to stop paying.

I hope you have got the phone blocked or asked for it back so you can then sell ?

Can people stop taking out a phone contract for a friend or lend a friend a credit card or lend money, it hardly ends well, in fact this is what Martin should say at the end of every episode of his ITV show.
