Continuous payment authority refund

I recently cancelled a Continuous Payment Authority direct with the bank for breakdown cover aswell as writing to the breakdown provider to ask them not to renew the policy. The bank said that if they took the money anyway, I would get a refund.

Well, they did take the money anyway so I rang the bank and I did receive a refund from the bank.

However, a few days after the renewal date, I also received an email from the breakdown provider to say sorry I didn't want to renew and that the policy will be cancelled and as they had already taken the money, the will refund me. Which they did.

So now I have received 2 refunds! The bank refund wasn't a debit card refund, it was money paid into my account by them with a special reference number. The breakdown company refunded me via debit card.

So my question is, will anything happen? Does the bank take the hit on their refund as they allowed the original payment to go through when I had requested it not to or does the bank debit the breakdown company in the same way as a disputed transaction would be debited?

I know I am actually in profit here and quite ok with them taking it back just wondered if anyone else has had this happen and what, if anything, happened?

The right thing to do is to contact the company and advise them you have received a refund already by your bank.

Let either the bank or the company know. It's the right thing to do and it means you don't have to worry about the money being taken out unexpectedly by your bank at a later date.

I'd just let the process work through - interfere and it's got a chance of becoming a Brian Rix farce.

It shouldn't get debited by 'surprise' without someone letting you know..(unless it's the Ulster Bank..lol).

Both the other parties got it wrong, let them worry about sorting it.

My thought process too. I spent enough time trying to cancel the policy in the first place so I'm not going to get in touch with them again. I just wondered if anyone else had experienced this thats all

Yep, I understood that - just thought I'd throw my opinion in for balance.

I experienced something a little bit similar a few years ago.

My debit card was stolen and used at a shop (after I had reported it stolen). The bank refunded me.

Then a few weeks later, a refund from the shop turned up in my account.

I waited to hear from the bank or the shop - but heard nothing, so ended up keeping the money.

(My guess is the thief bought something in the shop with my card, then maybe took it back hoping to get a cash refund. But the shop insisted on refunding to the card.)
