British Gas billing a non British Gas customer.

Hey,

Due to a mix up of addresses British Gas are trying to bill me for someone else's gas bill. I am 43, Flat 3 and a new property has been given the same address as the house I am in but instead of Flats 1-5 they have Flats A-D. This isn't the first issue we have had with this new property and they're not honest people as they keep parcels delivered to them incorrectly.

I explained the mix up to British Gas and the very rude woman I spoke to refuse to believe me even though I told her who my Gas supplier is for the last 10 years which is not BG and that I am on a prepayment metre so don't owe any money to anyone. She eventually hung up on me stating "I am incorrect" as records prove I am with BG.

Any advice would be welcomed.

Written complaint to BG. Details at their website of how to do it Or use the MSE backed Resolver http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/site/resolver who will make sure that the complaint gets to the right people.

I've had a few brushes with British Gas but noneof them all that recent. The most laughable was when I had Gas supplied by British Gas and then I moved to a house which didn't have gas. I gave British Gas notice that I was moving and that I didn't have gas at my new address and paid my account. They would not believe that I had no gas at my new address, transferred my account to the new address, continued to bill me for the standing charge and took it to the County Court when I refused to pay. They lost the case and paid me compensation for distress and inconvenience.

Overall, British Gas themselves don't recognise that they can ever get anything wrong. A bit like BT.

Put your complaint in writing but don't be surprised if they ignore it.

You need to give BG the meter serial number plus the meter point reference number that you are billed on. This will be on your annual statement or your supplier can give it to you. They can then check the industry and find where the problem is.

How does the supplier know your name?

If the bill is in the neighbour's name, why are you opening it?
Just give it to the neighbour and ask himn to get the supplier to correct the addrtess.

    Good luck!
