Gift card gone wrong - Anthropologie

Hello,

I am having an unexpected problem with the shop Anthropologie. I was given a gift card via email by a friend for my Birthday recently. It was to the value of £25. I found some items I wanted on the website and ordered them, it came to just over £30 including postage and packing so I had a little extra to pay myself. The items are knobs to replace some on a dressing table and a chest of drawers, made of glass and metal.

When going through the online checkout I entered in the gift card details and then it asked if I wanted to use PayPal or a card, I assumed for the rest of the amount. I clicked PayPal simply because it was convenient and completed the order.

But what has happened is the entire total was taken out of my PayPal account and nothing from the gift card. I emailed the shop to tell them what has happened and to ask for the situation to be corrected and they are refusing to help. They say PayPal cannot be used in combination with a gift card. The trouble is at no point during checkout was this flagged up. And since I found out what happened I have looked at their gift card faq online and again it isn't mentioned.

All they are offering is for me to return the items (!) - first of all I would rather keep them but use the gift card to pay for them, and secondly if that really isn't possible they are heavy and I have to pay the postage to return them! I have said I would like the money returned to my PayPal account and to pay with the gift card and a credit card for the excess, but I am being told this simply isn't possible. I am not in a position to buy nice things for myself at the moment as money is very tight, I simply would not have bought these knobs had I not been given a gift card.

Does anyone know legally how I stand here? Are they allowed to refuse to change how the order was paid for, even though they are at fault by not letting me know at any stage that the gift card cannot be used with PayPal? I would have thought they would try to resolve this given they are essentially at fault for not stating anywhere that a gift card cannot be used in combination with PayPal.

Thank you for reading.

I think you are stuck if you don't want to return the goods.

Surely you saw how much was going to be taken from your Paypal account before it was actually taken?

Of course they are allowed not to change what you have agreed to.

Any change would be a goodwill gesture, not an obligation.
  • I didn't agree to it, as far as I was aware the gift card had been accepted. I don't think I am being unreasonable here. Surely the shop website should have alerted me that paying with PayPal negates the gift card already entered during the check out process, or at the very least say this in their gift card information section.

Refuse the goods and have then returned to sender, then get a full refund.

Then re-order them using the giftcard and credit card.

Surely there was something saying how much you need to pay for PayPal?? Or have you got it automatically accepting payments?
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

    What??

You need to complain to Paypal that they took an unknown amount from your account when you clicked 'continue'.
