BEKO washer/dryer damaging clothes? If so how?

Hi all,

Bought a new Beko washer/dryer from Currys back in June.

Today noticed that 3 different loads of washing appear to have been torn in a very similar way!

Beko want to charge me up to £90 as a call out fee if the engineer isn't 100% certain the machine is at fault. I think this is shocking as the only way to determine if it's at fault is for the engineer to come out.

Currys aren't interested at all (I know their obligations under the law but they clearly don't).

It was bought in an Amex CC (so section 75 does apply if need be).

Anyone any ideas/thoughts about what could be causing tears like this (quite a unique shape!).

***UPDATE***

Had 2 calls one after the other.

Beko says the charge would ONLY be applied if I'm "wasting the engineer's time". For example loose stuff in the drum that I could have removed!

Currys then called. They said if a charge is levied by Beko then they would look to refund that tonne. Additionally if the machine is deemed fault free but clothes continue to be damaged then they would look to replace the machine.

Social Media seems to work better than customer services clearly :-)

Cheers all!

Have you tried examining the "paddles" in the drum?
Usually 3 of them, and different manufacturers use different methods of attachment. They have been known to come adrift with some makes/ models.
Check nothing has come loose or any sharp bits around them.

Also check for anything sharp stuck around the door seal and edge of the drum, or bra wire caught in the drum?

Edit: Check the drum hasn't split around the bearing (centre of drum at the back) Unlikely, but can't think of anything else . .

Did all those checks as part of the initial call this morning. Nothing loose or sharp that I can feel at all!

Is there a vent just above the door aperture (inside obviously) for the dryer air to enter the drum? Years ago Hotpoint had a problem where clothes tumbling caught on that vent & got damaged.

As said above feel around inside for any sharp edges or something like a bra wire that could be the problem.

Finally make sure you're not overloading it.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

I'm running the machine just now with some old light cotton t-shirts similar to the baby clothes that were damaged to try and replicate. Once that's done I will check the vent areas at the door.

No bra wire that I could feel this morning and I pressed quite hard all around the drum to replicate the movement during the spin cycle.

Re overloading: the baby clothes are washed pretty much daily with bibs. It's never more than half full. Not sure what the dress was washed with. Towels we're a regular load (4 normal towels plus 1 hand towel). Don't think overloading is the issue but thanks for asking :-)

We had similar problem with a new washing machine, was damaging some of the wifes clothes, found out it was the high spin speed was trying to push the clothes thru the holes in the drum, solved it by putting delicates in a washing bag and wash as normal.

We had something similar with a Hotpoint that went when we replaced it - if your fingers aren't finding it, doubt Beko will (though watch the soul, in case instructed [I'm sorry to be So Cynical]) & plan to swap for a replacement with all reasonable speed as I know how often the machine goes with children! (Why I fell for Costco with a thud - Persil in boxes heavier than son that first time!)

    Just an update:

    Engineer came out this afternoon.

He struggled to find the cause of the rips but agreed that the clothes have been damaged in a way "consistent" with washing machine damage.

Despite the machine only being 7 weeks old, they want to open it up and swap out the drum.

I know under legislation I MUST allow them the opportunity to repair...but after only 5 weeks of use I really think a replacement would be more reasonable. However it is what it is I suppose...

I doubt he had a drum in the van, we will have to wait for the next instalment ;)
