JS-OH, you're absolutely right, I just wish that I'd been better prepared the first time, and that I hadn't allowed myself to be put under so much pressure. The second time round I knew what to expect, and didn't see it as much as a failure when we ended up having to use formula. That's why I'm keen to point this out whenever I can: to avoid other women and their babies going through what we did just because they feel that they "should" be able to do this since "all" women can.

BTW, BumpyBecky, I tried fenugreek and it did seem to help a little, but not much in my case unfortunately.

C_P, you could also try Motilium/Domperidone, which my lactation consultant recommended. It's available over the counter and harmless to the baby (they prescribe it in much higher doses to babies that suffer from reflux) but it isn't licenced for use while b/f in the UK, so you'd have to pretend it was for something else ;) A lot of women get amazing results with it, although unfortunately it didn't work for me. I'm sure you can get some info on it if you google it :)

You can say domperidone is for migraine nausea, didn't do anything for my supply but worth a try. Equally fenugreek did nothing but make my sweat smell awful.

I see from your signature that you too had IVF - so did I, as well as my friend with the same lactation problem (unexplained infertility in both cases). My wonderful lactation consultant did some research, and found that insufficient milk production is more common after IVF pregnancies, although it isn't known why - presumably, something to do with hormone imbalances, which may have caused us to need IVF in the first place
I am another IVF mum who had bf probs. My 1st son ended up in hosp with dehydration due to my fervent beliefs that everyone could breastfeed (thanks NCT!), with my next son and subsequent twins I was prepared but still very disappointed that I didn't produce enough. I mixed fed them all in the end. I'm so interested to hear your consultants opinion, I talked to so many people over the years and never got any answers. Domperidone didn't work for me. Interestingly though I have just been diagnosed with an underactive thyroid.

To the OP I use playtex latex teats and they are not supposed to be sterilised but can be boiled occasionally This is because the heat shortens the life of the teats. The feeder you use may have parts that are similar. I have used the latex teats since my twins were born and never sterilize them, just wash in hot soapy water with no problems to my babies. HTH

Domperidone didn't work for me either - I wonder if that's to do with the fertility issues too?
