2 for 1 London Eye - Cheapest Train Ticket? No Oyster?

Hi all,
I'll be arriving in London this Friday and my travelling partner-in-crime wants to check out the London Eye. I'd like to use the 2 for 1 offer.... What's the cheapest possible train ticket that would work with this? Does the arrival station have to be the closest one to the London Eye (guessing Waterloo in this case?)
A quick look at the map suggest Vauxhall-Waterloo would be cheap...can we just buy a paper ticket for that route and it be enough? Do paper tickets still exist for such routes?
We'll be arriving in Gatwick, and probably using Oyster/Contactless to get into London. Guess that means we cant use an Oyster to get 2 for 1 entry at attractions? As we'll bet taking the route anyway, does it make sense to just book a Gatwick-London train ticket in advance and use that?
Thanks for any advice!

Cannot be Oyster.
Must be a National Rail paper ticket. I.e. not London Underground.
Yes, Vauxhall to Waterloo is good at £3.00 adult single.
When travelling from Gatwick to London, do not use Gatwick Express.
Gatwick Express charge a premium for a non-stop service, but the ordinary Southern service to Victoria is cheaper and takes approximately three minutes longer.0 -
Use Southern to Clapham Jn and then SWT straight into Waterloo: or train to London Bridge and then 2 stops on the Jubilee line to Waterloo. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

It is perfectly reasonable to walk from London Bridge to The Eye.
Not saying you should, just suggesting that any paper national rail ticket to any central London station will be acceptable.
Any national rail ticket office will sell a ticket between any two National Rail stations - even if the self service machines won't.0
