Overboarding

Hi

Doing a bit of sort out of the house this summer

We have lath and plaster ceilings and don't really want to pull them down given the mess it makes - having 2 kids don't help the situation!!

I was thinking of overboarding the instead. If I did this how much ceiling space would I roughly lose?

Thanks

If you have coving, there may be a problem where the new plasterboard butts up against it.
No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...

If the existing is sagging badly then you're better off cross battening with roof battens and then 12.5mm plasterboard - overall lose about 40mm.

(this gets you a flat ceiling which doesn't just follow the previous contours for those about to disagree!!)

No ifs or buts...if OP has coving it will need to be removed before overboarding and refitting new afterwards.

I have L&P ceilings in 90% of my property. Love the unevenness of them. We just got them skimmed to hide the little cracks and chips that have been taken out of them over the past 100 years. We got one room over-boarded as the condition of the ceiling was poor and it didn't lend itself to skimming, but i'd look to keep the existing.

Unless the keys are lost and there is physical movement of the ceiling when applying light upwards pressure (sagging), then overboarding is pointless IMO. You'll still need it skimming afterwards.
