credit report sparse

I am thinking of applying for mortgages in about 18 months but have never even thought about credit rating or credit cards (dont have one). I want to get one to build credit rating but if possible want to get a decent as a one as possible. I got a copy of credit report and the only thing on it was my virgin media bill from the last 5 years, despite paying all household bills through my debit card, paying off a huge 20000 loan on time every month for the last 3 years. I have moved house pretty much every year for the last 5 years as part of university and work and can think of possibly that as the reason why there is so little information on me/why there isnt much linked to my name.

Is there anything that can be done to rectify this or is it just a case of get a credit card and start building credit? (have done other stuff like join electoral register etc).

What do you mean your paying your bills through your debit card ?
Do you mean you don't use direct debits for your bills ?

First thing is your credit rating is just a number given you by the credit rating agencies, what matters is the credit history.

Gert your reports from all 3 agencies, Experian (or use mse club), Equifax (clearscore) Call credit (Noddle), use the ones in the brackets for the free version.

Get yourself a credit card eg Aqua and use it for petrol and pay it off in full using direct debit.

What you do need is patience.

In addition to the above, if you have a pay as you go mobile, see if you can get a month by month sim only deal. It will go on your credit file and will again show regular monthly payments.

Sim only contracts are cheap because you aren't buying a phone as part of your contract. They can be had for under a tenner a month.
