If the warranty terms say something like "the car must have a full service history to maintain warranty benefits", then the warranty provider can refuse to provide a remedy under warranty if the car does not have a full service history.

You are not the first. 26,000 is very low mileage for timing chain failure - name and shame.
Your only hope will be if the manufacturer will make a good will gesture. Some are more sympathetic and will wish to maintain their reputation.

Did your friend give you receipts for the serviceable items? (i.e. to prove that you did have the car serviced, and when, just not through the dealer network).
Were the replaced serviceable items in accordance with the manufacturer's requirements?
