Smart meters but had a meter reader.

Hi there

I have had smart meters installed in early May this year. Today Npower have sent a meter reader. He has read the electric but not the gas. Is this normal as I thought the idea of smart meters was that meter readers didn't need to read the meters as the smart meters send the readings.

Thanks

    Absolutely normal.
As is the fact he only read the electric meter - sometimes they do only check one or other of the meters, depends on what they are instructed to do.

Some companies now call them "meter safety checks" but basically the company is just checking that the meter works and has not been tampered with. They take a reading just to confirm that any readings you have sent (or the meter has, in reality) are in the correct area.

    Hmmm...

I've not sent you any email, but just wondering if you do not agree with the other responses alreday posted in this thread?

If you do not agree, perhaps yopu could post why not here, please.
Or should I email you, you email me the answer, and I will post it in the forum - what a palavar that would be

If you do agree with the responses already provided, I'm not sure what extra advice you can offer.
It seems it was a very simple question asked - Is it normal for nPower to come and read a smart meter?
Seems a simple yes/no answer would suffice.

But if there should be more to this than that, perhaps you could explain for the benefit of all MSE readers :)
I can see no reason to be coy about this

I work for BG and other suppliers as a meter reader. When smart meters are installed they may make a couple of visits in the first year then probably drop off to 5 years or whatever the latest rulings are for safety checks..
Its a good idea for a safety check because after watching BBC watchdog last night about a smart meter catching fire a year after it was installed..It was suggested that it was caused by the main tails to the meter not being tight enough..This could occur with any electric meter not just a smart meter.

... and at any time, as apparently the fire happened a good year after the meter was installed.
